Be Prepared for Upselling Opportunities and Mutually Beneficial Referral based Relationships with other Professionals

Remember, growth doesn’t simply mean more appointments. It’s not just about the number of appointments, it’s also about how much money you make on the appointment. You will come across situations where clients need more than just the notarization and the travel fee. The tips we’re about to share may go against the rules or regulations you’re bound to in your state. We’re just sharing tips based on what some of the notaries we work with and manage Google Ads for have mentioned to me, but they are spread out all across the country in different states.


One of the top ways we’ve heard our notary clients make more money is by being prepared to take along a witness if their client can’t come up with anybody. We imagine this depends from situation to situation, document to document, and state to state. But we definitely have a few notaries who we manage Google Ads for tell me that they regularly take along their spouse, or one of their kids whose over 18, and charge extra for the service of taking along a witness. We won’t get into pricing for that in this blog, although you will hear some real phone calls where this happens in our webinar where we include real audio recordings from some of our notary clients. Now you may not be able to accommodate every request that comes your way. Some callers may ask you for actual help drafting up a document of some sort. They may not actually need the notarization yet. They are earlier on in their process. In a case like this, it helps to have a professional relationship with a lawyer or other relevant professional who you can refer them to. In fact, you can have a mutually beneficial relationship with lawyers and other professionals when you refer them to business in this way. They in return, can use you as their go-to notary for their own clients and give you a steady stream of business that way.

Don’t just wait for this situation to arise only to be unprepared. And don’t wait for these relationships to fall into your lap. If you are already part of a networking and referrals group like BNI, reach out to the relevant professionals in that group and talk about the possibility of creating a mutually beneficial referral relationship. If you aren’t part of a referral group, you can find relevant professionals yourself with a few Google searches. Find Google My Business listings or Yelp listings of relevant professionals, check out their profiles, and see who you think you might get along with best. From there, give them a call, ask if you can visit them in person, and get to connect with them in person using the networking strategies in previous blogs.
